Madonna Hits New Record On The Billboard Hot 100 Chart

Madonna has hit a new record on the Billboard Hot 100, joining Cher as just the second woman in music history to debut songs on the weekly ranking chart in five consecutive decades.

From the 1980s through to the 2020s, Madonna has made her presence known to the music industry through hits such as Like A Virgin, Like A Prayer, Ray Of Light, Frozen, Music, Hung Up, Four Minutes and I Rise.

Taking over pop and dance charts for the fifth consecutive decade, Madonna re-enters the Billboard Hot 100 at #43 with Popular, a collaborative song with The Weeknd and Playboi Carti for the soundtrack of HBO’s The Idol, Entertainment Weekly reports.

Only Cher had marked the achievement of singles debuting on the Billboard Hot 100 from the 1960s to the 2000s until Madonna joined the ranks. Popular is Madonna’s first track to appear on the Billboard Hot 100 since 2015’s Bitch I’m Madonna, which hit #84 upon release. It’s also her highest debut since 2012’s Give Me All Your Luvin’ (#10).

The two women share a phenomenal record, while Elvis Presley had his singles debut on the Hot 100 over seven decades and Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney over six decades. Check out Popular below.

Last week, Madonna and Sam Smith unveiled their long-awaited, teased collaborative track, Vulgar. 

Vulgar isn’t sexually explicit like some would expect from the pair, but its language certainly is, with Madonna ad-libbing the following lines over an Eastern music-inspired beat and strings: “Do you know how to spell my name?/ B I T C H/ Go fuck yourself/ You heard me, bitch.”

Sam Smith and Madonna went into the studio to record Vulgar just one day after the Like A Prayer singer introduced Smith and Kim Petras for their performance at the 2023 Grammy Awards.

“Are you ready for some controversy?” she announced before making a heartfelt speech. “If they call you shocking, scandalous, troublesome, problematic, provocative or dangerous,” she said, “You are definitely onto something.”

Earlier that night, Smith and Petras won the Grammy for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for Unholy.

Marking the occasion on Instagram, Madonna wrote, “I wanted to give the last award which was Album of the Year, but I thought it was more important that I present the first trans-woman performing at the Grammys— a History making moment!! And on top of that, she won a Grammy!!”
