NEWS: Iona Zajac releases debut studio single Rubbish Jubilee produced by Rod Jones (Hamish Hawk, Idlewild) ahead of SXSW appearance in March

Rubbish Jubilee is the first full band release for Iona Zajac. It was recorded and mixed with producer Rod Jones (Idlewild, Hamish Hawk, Katie Gregson-MacLeod) at his Post Electric Studio in Leith, Edinburgh and has the multi-talented Zajac on guitar, keys and vocals, with Jones on bass and lead guitar and Andrew Turnbull (Redolent) on drums.

Zajac reflects on moving from self-recorded home recordings on to her first studio sessions:
“It was a strange and daunting prospect to go from recording songs in my bedroom with nothing but 1 mic & a nylon string guitar that I barely knew how to play… to fully formed arrangements with overdubs, a full band, producer… the works. Like rough sketches in a notebook leading to a fully realised painting, but I wasn’t the only person with a brush! The songs went to places I hadn’t expected, places I’d never have got to on my own. I think people might be surprised by the shift in vibe compared to the first EP, but it’s an important shift, it’s moving forwards, a bit bigger and broader and bouncier.”

The first result of this transition is the track ‘Rubbish Jubilee‘ and Zajac expands on the background behind the track:
“’Rubbish Jubilee’ is about something you’re supposed to celebrate but can’t because there’s something wrong with it. It celebrates love even though it’s flawed or went wrong somehow, the idea that something can be beautiful despite its imperfections, or even because of them.”

Zajac will be heading to SXSW in March joining others from the Post Electric family including Redolent and Hamish Hawk, and there is the promise of more new music throughout 2023.
