[Darran]
Welcome back to another episode of the DJ Sessions, where we feature the best DJs, producers, and industry professionals from around the world. I’m your host Darran, and right now we’re sitting in the back room at the VIP Platinum Tent with none other than Chuwe for Decadence in Phoenix, Arizona. Chuwe, how’s it going this evening?
Yo, yo, what’s up? What’s up, man? How is it?
Hey, I’m doing great. I’m doing great. You know, all things aside, sometimes we experience technical difficulties when we got through it, but you had no technical difficulties on your set opening the show.
Thank you for being here, and tell us a little bit about your 2022 and what brought you to Decadence.
[Chuwe]
Oh, dude, 2022 was a crazy year, super fast. I appreciate all the love that I’ve been getting, like, literally from going to EDC Mexico to EDC Vegas, playing in Vegas, playing shows out in LA with Dioro, DJ Snake. Like, it’s crazy, man, and getting a lot of support.
[Darran]
And you’re from New York City, one of my favorite cities in the world, and one of my favorite nightclubs in the world, the Brooklyn Mirage. Yeah, right? I went there for my birthday in 21 when you weren’t supposed to go out clubbing and doing stuff, but we went out there, man.
I just love that club so much, and you’ve been getting some major support from some major players. Tell us, name drop some of those right now.
[Chuwe]
I mean, definitely the homie DJ Snake. Yeah, Diplo, Good Times Ahead, Dioro, you know, Mala. Dude, literally, like, I’m so grateful for the amount of love that I’m getting.
Like, you know, it’s awesome, man.
[Darran]
And you’re closing out this year with New Year’s Eve for Decadence, New Year’s Eve weekend. What are some of your plans for, let’s say, early 2023? What do you got coming up?
[Chuwe]
Oh, man, there’s a lot. So, I’ll say a brand new EP is going to come out soon, and there’s so much tracks, a lot of collabs. Dude, like, this year, best believe, there’s going to have a lot of Chewy tracks out there.
Awesome.
[Darran]
And, you know, obviously, you perform on stage. You’re a DJ. You get up there.
Is Chewy a different person on stage than he’s off stage?
[Chuwe]
Oh, man, Chewy’s Chewy, man. People, bro, man, you meet me, they’re like, oh, that’s Chewy. Like, super chill vibes.
Positive always, you know?
[Darran]
Absolutely. You know, when you’re not entertaining others, what do you do to entertain yourself?
[Chuwe]
Literally, I love watching documentaries. I love to feed my brain all types of knowledge I can learn. Besides that, I mean, the history of music, you know, where everything comes from.
Different genres come from this. You know, the growth of music, you know?
[Darran]
Have you watched the Miss Cleo documentary yet?
[Chuwe]
Yes.
[Darran]
I was talking with my friend the other day about it. He said he actually teared up a little bit at the end. And, you know, I did not know she went to one of our schools in Seattle for acting, I believe, is all that stuff.
So, I got to watch that one if you like documentary. I heard it’s pretty awesome. You know, how do you define success as a DJ?
Is it a Beatport top 10 hit or a sold out tour? What are your thoughts on this?
[Chuwe]
I would say, you know, just try to, you know, I mean, try to make a song that you love. But at the same time, now we’re in an era where support is what makes a song hot sometimes, you know? Like, you can have an awesome song, well produced.
But, I mean, I feel like your fans would be your fans and they’ll share it. And you know how TikTok goes. You have a song on TikTok.
It’s different. But, you know, I mean, I would say just do what you got to do. Love it.
Produce it. Release it. And get it to the right hands of everybody.
Like, don’t be scared to send a song to a big name. You just never know.
[Darran]
Do you prefer DJing large-scale events or more intimate, smaller nightclubs? What’s your pick on that, if you could choose?
[Chuwe]
I mean, I’ll say both. You know, because, I mean, both. I mean, at both events, you’ll get super love, like, so much love.
So, I would say the smaller events, you know, you get to meet everyone. You’re like, yo, packed house. You’re like, dude, festivals.
Like, you try to meet everyone, but they’re all like everywhere, different stages and stuff, you know? But, yeah, I mean, the festival is good for the pictures, you know, packed crowd. And like the small crowds is also good for pictures, but it’s more about fan love, you know?
Absolutely. It’s more of a vibe too, 100%.
[Darran]
If there’s something that you can see that’s really messed up in the electronic music scene that you could feel that needs to be changed, what would that be and how would you go about changing it?
[Chuwe]
I mean, my thing is support everyone. Like, you know, like, no negative vibes. It’s all positive.
If it doesn’t happen, guess what? That should be an example. That should motivate you to go even harder.
So, when you go hard and you keep it cool with everyone and you show love like a positive person would do, I mean, everything’s going to go perfect, you know? So, but, you know, just be supportive, you know, be positive always, you know?
[Darran]
Awesome. You know, Jerry, before I let you get going, is there anything else you want to let our DJ Sessions fans know about?
[Chuwe]
I mean, definitely, you know, big shout-outs to you guys, 100% for showing me love. Shout-outs to everyone who shows love. I do that.
I’m so grateful. There’s new music coming out. Chewy’s definitely gonna have so much tour dates coming up, 2023.
Yeah, and shout-outs to everybody tuned in right now. We’re here, man.
[Darran]
And one final two-letter word for you. Well, two words, but I usually simplify and say, what are your thoughts on virtual reality and what it’s going to do for the music industry?
[Chuwe]
I mean, we’re in the future and it’s gonna get so much better now. So, I feel like, you know, like sometimes people can’t make it to the events, you know? And they rely on the whole virtual.
I would say 100% more festivals got to go more of like virtual, meaning like let it happen in real life, but also have that virtual camera so everyone can see overseas because people love to come overseas to the States for festivals. So, you know, I mean, I feel like it’ll be dope. Absolutely.
[Darran]
Well, we’ll have to invite you over to our virtual reality nightclubs. We’re launching here. We’ve got them in all space and VR chat soon.
We’ll talk offline about all that stuff. But where can people find out more information about you, Chuwe?
[Chuwe]
Definitely on my Instagram, at DJCHUWE. Twitter is the same thing. Literally, I just tweet stuff, I post stuff, or sometimes I tease people.
But no, yeah, man, definitely. Chuwe everywhere. CHUWE, yeah, for sure.
[Darran]
Awesome. Well, thank you so much for coming on the DJ sessions and playing for us tonight here at Decadence for the New Year’s Eve event for 2022.
