'Weird: The Al Yankovic Story' Wins Two Emmy Awards

“Weird Al” Yankovic is officially an Emmy winner, with the Daniel Radcliffe-starring film about his life, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, taking home the award for Outstanding Television Movie.

The award was won at the delayed (due to writers and actors strikes) 2023 Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday (6 January) – “part one” of the award ceremony that recognises the “technical and other similar achievements in American television programming”. The main Emmys will be handed out on Monday, 15 January.

In addition to Weird Al’s win, the film also won the award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Limited or Anthology Series, Movie or Special, with composers Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson taking the prize.

The five-time Grammy Award winner reportedly told reporters backstage about his halfway to EGOT (a person who wins an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Award) status, per The Hollywood Reporter, “It only took me 40 years, in another 40 years I’ll be there”.

Weird Al wasn’t the only artist to take home awards at the Emmys, with Ed Sheeran winning Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics for So Long, Farewell / Song Title: A Beautiful Game from Ted Lasso alongside collaborators Foy Vance and Max Martin. Danny Elfman also won Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music for Wednesday.

Weird Al made headlines last month upon sharing his Spotify Wrapped message to fans, roasting the streaming platform for paltry compensation for artists.

In a cheeky video message on his Wrapped feature, Weird Al revealed that despite amassing a staggering 80 million streams on Spotify this year, he joked that his earnings amounted to a mere $12 – enough to buy “a nice sandwich at a restaurant”.

“It’s my understanding that I had over 80 million streams on Spotify this year,” Yankovic said.

“So, if I’m doing the math right, that means I earned $12. Enough to get myself a nice sandwich at a restaurant. So, from the bottom of my heart, thanks for your support and thanks for the sandwich.”

Weird Al toured Australia last March in support of his The Unfortunate Return Of The Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour. The shows brought intimate evenings of musical comedy, focusing on original, non-parody songs from his 14-album catalogue.
