Live Review + Photo Gallery: The Silversound’s FuzzBoxGirl EP launch at The Brunswick Ballroom 03.11.2023

On a lazy Sunday afternoon in sunny Melbourne, The Silversound came to show their latest wares with the launch of their new EP, FuzzBoxGirl (available via Cheersquad Records).

In an early surprise, the band initially took to the stage minus their rhythm section of Stu Thomas and Leroy Cope. The two guitar players of the group, Andrew Tanner and Shane O’Mara, opened with a delightfully acoustic version of Sunn Raga, much as they had done at the 3RRR independent radio recording which became the final track on the EP.

Next up, the band played the beautifully melodic The Honeyeater, before going ‘full-fuzz’ on the swirling title track of the EP, FuzzBoxGirl. Guitarist, Shane O’Mara explained the process of how the song was written after he, as every true guitarist does, purchased a new fuzz pedal and excitedly sent a recording of a scuzzy riff using the pedal to singer and fellow guitarist, Andrew Tanner, highlighting the sound of his newfound gizmo. By the next day, Tanner had written this marvellous paean to the little device that has so changed the sound of music to this day, and thus the seeds for the EP were born.

The band then moved through the trippiest songs of their catalogue taken from the debut, self-titled album release from earlier in the year, culminating with the brilliant groove-laden, Shaker. When a band leave you wanting more, and wishing that the afternoon would never stop, you know they have hit the mark.

The Silversound have made two fabulous recordings this year, both of which have been on high rotation on this reviewers playlists. However, the recorded output, excellent as it is, seemingly pales into insignificance when compared to the on-stage presence and sound of these master song-writers and players.
