Biography

What is Seattle Gay News (SGN)?

Seattle Gay News (SGN) is a prominent, in-print LGBTQIA+ newspaper distributed across Seattle and the Puget Sound area. Serving the region loud and proud for over 51 years, the monthly publication is most known for its in-depth reporting on local and regional community issues, as well as its coverage of Arts & Culture topics.

Throughout the decades, the newspaper has documented major community events, political campaigns, and cultural moments. During the HIV/AIDS crisis, the SGN was the first Seattle publication to dedicate itself to informing the public, promoting safer sex education, printing obituaries, and organizing events and vigils. Former SGN publisher George Bakan championed the inclusion of Bisexual and Transgender people in Pride in the 1990s. And the paper has also been critical to the success of Seattle Pride since its inception, including fundraising, organizing, and staff involvement.

In an era of increased political hostility against LGBTQIA+ people, the SGN has remained a lifeline and vital source of news, commentary, and resources for PNW residents. The SGN stands ready to continue fighting on behalf of all the diverse communities it represents, both now and in the future.
