Premiere: Matt Ó Shares Look At Upcoming Debut EP On ‘Sonny’

Irish R&B artist Matt Ó returns with the infectious new single ‘Sonny’ and we’re excited to be running the premiere!

Having made a name for himself as one half of alternative hip-hop duo Tebi Rex, touring across the UK and Europe and appearing on line ups at festivals including SXSW, Eurosonic and The Great Escape, Matt Ó has also been releasing his own solo material and demonstrating what a well rounded and inventive artist he is.

The new single is a prime example of his work – musically warming and possessing an infectious, summery, chilled aura. The track’s tasteful, lo-fi R&B instrumentation is topped with Matt Ó’s flawless flow and he moved effortlessly between rapping and singing to great affect. While understated and unassuming, ‘Sonny’ also encompasses Matt Ó’s pop exploits with catchy vocal hooks and an effortless likability.

Talking about writing solo material, the new EP and making the music he wants to make, Matt explains:

“When I was 12, my teacher gave us a writing exercise. Anything we wanted. I knew he loved history. I knew I didn’t. Still, I went for it, and I wrote an absolute piece of garbage for him. His words, not mine – I can tell that you wrote this because you thought I’d like it. Instead, you should write about what you know – not what you think others are interested in. That’s where you get something special, where you find the best art. That’s what this tape is to me. It’s what I know.. myself. I’m soft, I’m unassuming, I’m grateful, I’m cheeky, I’m romantic, I’m sad, I’m anxious at times and at other times entirely confident in who I am and what I can do.”

An artist who is definitely one to watch as he builds towards the release of his first full EP, Matt Ó’s new single ‘Sonny’ is release tomorrow.
