Track: Canberra’s exquisite Sesame Girl unveils the dreamy perfection of ‘Leave’: a magnificent ethereal splendour, and announces launch dates.

Backseat Mafia | November 24, 2021

Sesame Girl‘s ‘Leave’ is an absolutely gorgeous dream pop jewel that sparkles with a deep melancholia and drips with an indelible melody. Echoing deep in the genes of the band are traces of Cocteau Twins, The Cranberries (in their restrained mode), The Sundays and more recently Fazerdaze: you get the picture. Achingly beautiful melodies, soft and velvet vocals and a shimmer in the instrumentation. Singer Heather Gordon says of the track:

Leave is about surviving pain and sadness and realising there’s so much to live for. It’s an open dialogue about my battle with mental health. For me, showing vulnerability like this is really scary, the stigma around mental health is such a big part of the problem.

This anxiety and vulnerability seeps from the vocals and creates a wash of delicate sounds and vocals. Duncan also directs the accompanying video which reflects the pastoral elegance and ethereal glow of the track, combined with a disarming charm and joy:

I’ve completely fallen in love with this track.

‘Leave’ was produced by Fletcher Matthews (Dear Seattle, STUMPS, Sweater Curse, CLEWS). The band says:

All the elements of ‘Leave’ are really lush and dreamy, which we hinted at with ‘Get Up’, previously, but this track really fleshes it out. Both tracks are super special but ‘Leave’ has more of a message.

‘Leave’ is out now and available through all the usual download and streaming sites here.

Sesame Girl will be launching the single in Canberra on 10 December 2021 and Wollongong on 1 December – details and tickets available here.
