Sophie Cates details high-profile breakup on final album single ‘i don’t see you (how i used to)’

She Makes Music | December 19, 2023

Sophie Cates is gearing up towards her sophomore album, SUPERNOVA – a confessional, 12-track project that dives into the emotional depths of her high-profile breakup with a well-established musician.

Now, Sophie unveils the LP’s final single, ‘i don’t see you (how i used to)’ – the most purely indie rock song on SUPERNOVA and the track that marks a definitive turning point in the record’s narrative arc. ‘i don’t see you (how i used to)’ was the final song written for SUPERNOVA, and while the rest of the tracklist focuses on Sophie’s immersion into her own anger, frustration, and regret, this new single reflects a transition from mourning to empowering acceptance.

“‘I don’t see you (how I used to)’ is that exact moment I felt the first relief from mourning my relationship. It was waking up and remembering the not so perfect moments instead of being hit with all my best memories. And it was acknowledging the fact that I had been manipulated to only see this person for their best self, when most of the time I was getting their worst,” says Sophie.

“For me this song represents the long road to realizing you might not have had the love you thought you did, and trying to untangle yourself after years of manipulation and unhealthy power dynamics. This song is about feeling clarity and feeling your power slowly returning to your body.”
