Los Angeles Promoters Behind Dialogue and Midnight Lovers launch Chapter One rare vinyl record store

Decoded Magazine | April 13, 2021

For six years, the promoters behind flagship Los Angeles underground events Dialogue and Midnight Lovers have transformed the city’s forgotten spaces into temporary windows to global clubland. They are consistently celebrated by patrons and artists alike for their forward-thinking curation and commitment to safe and open dancefloors. With parties shuttered and creative communities stifled worldwide, Rolando Alvarez and Eddie Vela push forward to preserve the once thriving LA music scene with the launch of their rare vinyl shop Chapter One Records and vinyl-only record label Dialogue Records.

Chapter One aims to fuel what its founders see as a cultural renaissance aimed to revitalize Los Angeles’ nightlife in the wake of shutdowns. No longer willing to embrace anonymity as a solution to the limitations affecting the city’s after-dark culture, the store will act as a public facing bridge to an otherwise covert world. This new creative hub will also offer their community a range of in-store gatherings and services including release listening parties, live stream production, media creation and more.

At the core of Chapter One’s rare collection sits its consignment program which showcases a who’s who assemblage of underground curators. LA dancefloor regulars can flip through bins curated by scene leaders like SONN’s of Making Shapes, west coast OG TK Disco, Dublab’s esteemed vinyl purist Daddy Differently, party-starters Club Tularosa plus of course Dialogue and Midnight Lovers. Resident labels include Stones Throw, Visionquest, and Let’s Play House.

Collectively Dialogue and Midnight Lovers have played a key role in shaping the city’s modern house and techno scene hosting some of the world’s most in demand artists, labels, and collectives. Dialogue remains LA’s flagship minimal house upstart with key bookings like RPR Soundsystem, Sonja Moonear, tINI, Maayan Nidam, Guti, FUSE London, Traumer, SIT, Bihn and many more. Midnight Lovers curation is embodied by sultry all night disco affairs soundtracked by the likes of Omar S, Chaos in the CBD, Seth Troxler, Move D, Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap, Session Victim, Crazy P and more.

Now Dialogue aims to expand its curational reach with a vinyl only imprint under the same banner, launching with a two track journey into the depths of Romanian minimal from Ada Kaleh. The ‘Solace in Repetition’ EP already sits at the #1 pre-order spot on Decks, and features remixes from fellow Romanian duo SIT and Visionquest legend Shaun Reeves—a fitting debut for what will become a staple label amongst collectors world-wide.

The collective aims to harness the bedrock cultural significance of vinyl combined with their in-house media team, live streaming and production studios to offer the world a look into the tenured Los Angeles scene. The project offers a step forward for a nightlife city often undervalued by the global community and misunderstood by some.
