Interview: Genish

Only Techno | February 1, 2023

Making his debut last Friday on Adana Twin’s legendary TAU imprint with his two-part ‘Like A Dream’ EP, we caught up with hotly-tipped Israel producer Genish to talk about the release, the music scene in Tel Aviv, plans for 2023 and more.

It’s a pleasure to have you here with us Genish. How have you been and where are you answering this interview from?

Hi, thank you very much, nice to meet you,
I am currently in the studio in Tel Aviv.

First things first, please can you introduce yourself for our readers?

Hi, I’m Genish, a 28-year-old producer and DJ from Tel Aviv, Israel.

How did you get to where you are now?

I discovered at the age of 20 that our dreams are what give us happiness and motivation for life. When I make music, I dream, I imagine, and I get excited every single moment.

Who or what were your biggest musical influences and inspirations growing up?

It’s difficult to give you just one name because, while I was growing up, I frequently listened to Pink Floyd, Enigma, and Queen with my father and more female singers and oriental music with my mother.

When I was 17 years old, I began going to clubs. Because I was a tall guy, the doorman was perplexed, and I began to expose myself to more electronic music. Satori, Chaim, and Red Axes were initially some of my favorite artists.

Can you tell us about the electronic music scene in Israel, and more specifically, Tel Aviv, right now?

Since January, everyone has been working more on the upcoming holiday. Similar to Halloween, Purim is celebrated with numerous large and small festivals and events. Along with the fact that the scene is constantly evolving, labels and producers are appearing here in a variety of styles and colors, and it’s exciting to witness and be a part of this.

Besides the obvious music spots, where are some of your favorite places to hang out in the city?

For me, the really good places are the sea, Port Said (restaurant), Cafe Europe, Drama.

You’ve just release your new EP out on TAU called Like A Dream. What can you tell us about this project?

It’s true that the project began with the song “Drum Spell,” which, after I produced it, I realized I really, really liked and that it had something unique and different. Then, a few months later, “Like a Dream,” which I began producing in a coffee shop in London, came along. From there, I flew back to Tel Aviv, and the moment I landed, I entered the studio to finish it. That week I performed a sunrise set at the legendary Block Club, and when I saw the audience’s response, I knew there was something special going on.

How did you connect with the TAU crew for the EP?

I’ve long been a fan of the label and the work they do. I asked my manager, Eiad, who has connections to the Adana Twins, to look into the options. When I finished the “Like A Dream” EP, we sent it to them, and we immediately received positive feedback, which I am very happy about. Initially, we sent something else that I thought was very much in line with the label’s taste, and they liked it but didn’t fly on it.

If you could collaborate with any artist in the scene right now, who would it be?

The most sincere and accurate response would be Red Axes, simply because everything they do is much better than anything I hear.

Top 3 favourite records you love to play at the moment?

I mainly play my own music and unreleased upcoming stuff these days, so I don’t have an answer for that.

Can you tell us about some of your favorite non-electronic music artists?

Dodo Tessa, who combines rock with Middle Eastern music and Ethnix, is an Israeli band that produces very special and colorful music.

What else have you got planned for 2023?

In 2023, besides the releases on TAU, my third release will come on the Ya Hala Ya Hala Records, in collaboration with a talented duo, a single with Chaim, flights, a live show, and many other musical surprises that you will hear and see later.

Any final words for our Only Techno readers?

Dear Friends: I hope you liked reading through this interview, and more than that, I hope you like the music. Thanks for all the support.
