‘Ciao Italia’ compilation pays tribute to the Italian house underground of the early 90s

A new compilation, Ciao Italia. Generazioni Underground, celebrates the unique blend of house music that emerged in Italy in the early 90s, borrowing both from the Hi-NRG and Italo sounds of the previous decade, as well as the Chicago and Detroit beats making their way across the Atlantic.

Set to be released by Rebirth on 25 June, the compilation is described as a ‘tribute to the artists that wrote this story’, many of which recorded under a number of different aliases during their recording careers.

This includes the likes of Andrea Gemolotto, Massimino Lippoli, Fabrice, Mr Marvin, Davide Rizzatti and Angelino Albanese (DFC Records), Leo Anibaldi, Ricky Montanari and Flavio Vecchi (Love Quartet), Paramour, Adrian Morrison and Dj Ralf (Heartbeat Records), Alex Neri and Marco Baroni, Palmares, Don Carlos and Stefano Tirone (Montego Bay Experience) Francesco Montefiori (Key Tronics Ensemble/Soft House Company), Claudio “Moz-Art Rispoli and many more.

The compilation was borne out of an idea by Daniele ‘Shield’ Contrini, with the art direction of Stupefacente Studio and featuring an editorial insert by journalist Elia Zupelli, which reconstructs the era through photographs, interviews, rarities and dazzling memories from the dancefloor.

Football fans of a certain age will also recognise the graphic that adorns the cover; a tribute to Ciao, the stick-figure mascot for the Italia 90 World Cup.

‘A rhythmic journey to rediscover what has been, what continues to be and what will be, “Ciao Italia” tells a story that still sounds incredibly current, whose reverberations continue to be the object of veneration among DJs, clubbers and music lovers of new generations,’ as the official press release puts it.

‘As confirmed by the new productions ideally inspired by the iconic sound of the time, [it is the] testimony of an Italian avant-garde alive and vivid not only in memories but more than ever in the here and now.’

Ciao Italia. Generazioni Underground is released on 25 June.
